How to Propagate Bougainvillea Cuttings
Follow this step-by-step guide to propagate healthy bougainvillea from cuttings. Great for expanding your garden or sharing with friends.
Materials You Will Need
- โBougainvillea cuttings โ available in our Etsy shop
- โSharp, clean pruning shears
- โRooting hormone powder or gel (optional โ or use fresh aloe vera gel)
- โA small pot with drainage holes
- โGrowing medium: coarse sand, sphagnum peat moss, perlite, or well-draining potting mix
- โWater
- โLarger pot or garden bed for transplanting later
Take a healthy bougainvillea cutting that is 4โ8 inches long and contains several leaves.
Using sharp, clean pruning shears, make a 45-degree cut just below a node (the bump where leaves or stems grow). This is where the roots will form.
Carefully remove all thorns and excess leaves from the cutting, leaving only 2โ3 leaves at the top. This reduces stress on the cutting and encourages successful propagation.
