How to Propagate Bougainvillea Cuttings

Follow this step-by-step guide to propagate healthy bougainvillea from cuttings. Great for expanding your garden or sharing with friends.

Materials You Will Need

  • โœ“Bougainvillea cuttings โ€” available in our Etsy shop
  • โœ“Sharp, clean pruning shears
  • โœ“Rooting hormone powder or gel (optional โ€” or use fresh aloe vera gel)
  • โœ“A small pot with drainage holes
  • โœ“Growing medium: coarse sand, sphagnum peat moss, perlite, or well-draining potting mix
  • โœ“Water
  • โœ“Larger pot or garden bed for transplanting later

Take a healthy bougainvillea cutting that is 4โ€“8 inches long and contains several leaves.

Using sharp, clean pruning shears, make a 45-degree cut just below a node (the bump where leaves or stems grow). This is where the roots will form.

Carefully remove all thorns and excess leaves from the cutting, leaving only 2โ€“3 leaves at the top. This reduces stress on the cutting and encourages successful propagation.
